Worried that YouTube success is reserved for 20-year-olds? Well, no matter what age you’re at, you’re getting a ton of value from this episode! Health and Fitness YouTuber Dr. Becky Gillaspy is on this week and we’re talking about taking imperfect action and how that can pay off in a huge way. She started off focused on selling her programs but being on YouTube evolved her mission to provide her health knowledge and advice to women over 50. Now she has a thriving business and channel with over 275k subscribers! We’ll also be diving behind the scenes into her business, and how to use YouTube to blow it up! So you’re in for YouTube growth and business success in today’s episode. Are you ready?
Dr. Becky started her channel to promote a product she put out on her website. She heard that adding videos to her blog would help her rank on Google. So she put up a couple of videos in 2012 and that was it, she never looked at it again… until she came back and saw that they got immense traction and growth. So she’d continue to upload content sporadically. It wasn’t until summer 2017 that she started taking her channel seriously, uploading once a week consistently. She found that she loved the creativity behind coming up with the right combination for a viral hit and decided to put her energy behind making her channel stand out. Now she’s at 275k subscribers and she’s not slowing down nor stopping!
“I now think about my title before I have the video conceptualized in my brain.”
She’s a strong advocate for starting where you are and taking that first step. In this episode we walked through one of her earlier videos where she was using a low quality borrowed camera, no microphone, zero lighting, noise everywhere – but that video has gone on to get 1.7 million views! We also cover how to find a place to belong and really thrive on YouTube no matter your age, how she gets 100 email opt-ins a day for her business, her failures and lessons along the way and so much more! Enjoy!
“I get comments from people in Australia and the UK and it reminds me: this is truly an amazing time to be in business.”
4 Key Interview Takeaways
- It’s not about the buzzwords, it’s about the curiosity factor. When you’re thinking of titles for your videos, the reality is the buzzwords can only take you so far. Yes, you can ride a trend if you’re one of the thousands of YouTubers talking about Keto, but you’ll more likely be 1 of 1 if you’re sparking curiosity in people’s minds about the same topic, without using the buzzwords. How you can creatively get people curious enough to click your video is the superpower that will get you ahead of the pack every time.
- Embed a video with each blog. If you’re a blogger and you want to drive more traffic, this helps you rank better on google. Plus you get a chance to create more ways for your readers to consume your content AND get a chance to build a following on YouTube and potentially get paid through that medium, which is a sweet bonus.
- Gather the courage to start. Start where you are. There will always be an excuse to not start. Even though I say you need better gear today than if you started 7 years ago, don’t let that let you off the hook from putting out videos with whatever you have. The truth is, whatever you have and know is EXACTLY what some – a community of people – want to know and are waiting for.
- Dealing with the sophisticated algorithm. Keyword stuffing is no longer a thing. It’s harder now to get your videos out there. But once you’ve figured out how to work with the algorithm instead of hacking it, you’ll have a much more fun time for getting views. For example, Dr. Becky suggests you talk about the purpose of the video and the title in your intros because the audio content plays a role in the algorithm. So do set up your titles, thumbnails, tags, and descriptions, but also your intros.

MY FAVORITE BUSINESS TOOLS
Course Creation: Looking to create a course? Kajabi is the BEST platform hands down. I use this for my course after extensive research on all the other platforms.
Live Calls and Interviews: I use Ecamm for my podcast interviews, both audio and for YouTube that you see here on YouTube. It makes it super easy to share my screen and create the split-screen with my guest. I’m not super techie and this software is really easy to use!
Webinars and Live calls: I use Zoom.us for my group coaching calls in my private membership group for female YouTube creators. It’s also the software I use to record my Road to 100k YouTube Subscribers Masterclass!
THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT
After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!
- 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
- Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
- Audio: If you want to upgrade your set-up, audio should be one of the first investments (after a good camera). This microphone is unanimously the favorite amongst my podcast guests.
- Podcast/Voiceover Microphone: If you are looking for a great microphone for a podcast or video voiceover, this is it! This is the one that you see in all of my videos and the one I’ve recorded my podcast on for years.
- Webcam: For my interviews, that you see in my videos, this is the webcam that I use. Super inexpensive and easy to set up!
- Inexpensive Lighting Kit: Need to pick up some lights but don’t want to spend a ton? This is a great set that will get you started and help improve the look of your videos.
- Ring light: Looking for that beauty look? Invest in a ring light! This is an inexpensive light that does that trick!
