Is there anything more exciting than building a business and a brand on your own terms? Being able to connect authentically with your tribe and make a successful living while you’re at it is the dream, and you’re going to want to hear from this lady boss who is living it. On this episode, Australian fitness YouTuber Sarah’s Day shares her entire journey and her best advice for growing your online empire as an influencer!

When Sarah first launched her personal brand in 2012, she actually started on Instagram. She quickly realised that typing long captions was not for her and that she would rather share her message more naturally through video. Her channel focuses on helping women live a healthy and fit lifestyle in a maintainable, enjoyable way that is true to themselves. Her YouTube channel has grown since 2013 to 700,000 subscribers and over 70 million video views!

“People were really invested in my life and they wanted to see how I was going to turn that around.”

Using her platform as an Australian fitness YouTuber, she helps her tribe of women heal their bodies naturally through functional fitness and utilizing natural recipes and home remedies. Sarah is a holistic health queen! She also has a healthy snack brand and an activewear clothing line and it’s impressive how she’s been able to add revenue streams and attract people who really connect with her personality.

“Everyone wants the secret, everyone wants the hack. Unfortunately, there is no secret. There’s my advice and my story, but there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.”

Sarah’s avatar is a girl looking for balance and who is looking to live a healthy and fit lifestyle in a maintainable, enjoyable way; whatever that means to her. She believes everyone has multiple sides to them and that finding the balance of when to explore one side more than the other, who to surround yourself with, and finding your ideal lifestyle is so gratifying and freeing. Sarah’s experience of finding that balance helped her make huge transformations in her life and her passion is now to help girls find their balance as well.

“That is winning: it’s not a number, it’s if I changed someone’s life.”

7 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Play to your strengths. You may be naturally more animated than an Instagram profile can handle. Try your expressive style on YouTube and see what happens! Like Sarah, you might just find that you’re more natural and people resonate with you more there. The opposite could be true as well – maybe short bursts of content are your thing. Rock it!
  2. Consistency is equal to security. Isn’t it the worst to watch a show on Netflix and find out it has already been cancelled?! The same goes for your content – your consistency creates security for your subscribers and viewers. We are creatures of habit, so we need to see that not only are you posting when you said you will, but your branding is consistent as well.
  3. Authenticity is the biggest tipping point. Don’t forget that social media is all about people, so you need to show as much of your personality as you can. When you share real and honest parts of yourself with the world, you’ve opened yourself up to find people who resonate with you deeply and they can become your most raving fans. They will run through the streets telling everyone about you because of how impactful your story was for them. Your bravery could help them get past issues they’ve been afraid to confront.
  4. Don’t focus on numbers. Focus on your audience, content, and coming from a genuine place of wanting to have an impact. Too many people get caught up on numbers and they lose sight of their audience, which in turn, ruins the numbers! Make content you would want to watch and don’t get lost chasing the numbers.
  5. Choose your brand deals wisely. Authenticity and focusing too much on the numbers apply to brand deals as well! Don’t chase the shiny numbers they are offering you, instead look at the best fit for you and your audience. Don’t advertise a product you’re not in love with, people will see that inauthenticity from a mile away.
  6. Your vibe attracts your tribe. Who you’re surrounding yourself with has a HUGE impact on your mood, your goals, and even your trajectory in life. Audit your circle to ensure they’re bringing out the best version of you, and you’re bringing out the best in them as well.
  7. Watch your thumbnails. Thumbnails are the biggest trigger on YouTube that gets people to tune into your videos. Avoid clickbait and think authentically about the kind of things you or your tribe might want to watch and make that thumbnail. If you can, use Photoshop and not the thumbnail makers out there. They are incredibly restricting, but they’ll work in a pinch if you don’t have an alternative.
