How to Slay Your Video Editing with Video Editor Emily Olson: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 155

Editing your videos can be scary, but we’re here to your rescue! We’ve got you covered as lifestyle YouTuber and video editor, Emily Olson, steps in to save the day. In this episode, she shares the most important tips and tricks you need to know to make your videos stand way above the rest!

When Emily started on YouTube, she had aspirations of getting to the top of the makeup & fashion niche. But through pursuing her creative passions, she serendipitously got connected to another YouTuber, Nikki Phillippi, and her editing career magically began. Now she jokingly calls herself a “full-time YouTuber who doesn’t make videos” and works with Nikki Phillippi full-time, as well as a number of other creators.

“I think you have to be bad at something before you’re good at it.”

I really love Emily’s passion. She pours so much into each video she edits, and her goal is always to bring out the best in the person she’s editing and make them look as good as possible. Emily lives in California with her droneographer husband and two children.

“Put a blooper, a two second scene in the beginning to hook the audience, give them a tiny preview, and then go to the intro.”

5 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Networking 101: Find similar interests. Networking doesn’t have to be hard. There’s a lot of talk about knowing the right thing to say and “fake it ‘til you make it”, but the real, authentic way to build strong connections doesn’t need any of that. By Emily’s perfect example, with her first client, she was genuinely interested in a lot of the same things as her client. She commented on her page, tweeted her about things they had in common, and that was the foundation of a relationship that was inevitable. If you’re trying to get someone’s attention, is there anything niche and unusual you two have in common? Try reaching out with that… and have patience.
  2. Play to your strengths. You know what’s exhausting? Doing something you’re neither good at nor love! When it comes to YouTube, Emily knew herself well enough to realize that she prefers to edit, not to film, so jumping in as a video editor was the natural next step. Others might prefer filming and want to focus all their creativity there. If that is you, there are tons of people like Emily who can take care of your editing, so you can focus on your zone of genius.
  3. Google is your friend. Gone are the days when you’d be expected to know everything there is to know on a topic to start doing it for a living. If you’re new to YouTube, jump in and use the free tools on YouTube and Google to figure things out, pay to take a course or work with a mentor. Don’t think that you don’t know enough to start. That will be the biggest waste of time and a killer of your creative dreams.
  4. Pay attention to your pacing. Emily says that a huge mistake that YouTubers are making is keeping their videos at a slow pace. Cut out the pauses, dead air and gaps using good jump cuts. That keeps the video at a fast pace and allows you to deliver information quickly. Viewers’ attention spans are getting shorter and shorter because of the huge amount of content competing with each other, so using jump cuts to your advantage is a must.
  5. Always preview your videos. Give people a quick glimpse of the type of video they will be watching. If it’s a sad video, show a quick (really quick) two-second clip of a sad scene from the video. If it’s a fun video, show a quick blooper before you roll the intro. This gets the audience mentally ready for what’s to come and hooks them in those first two seconds.
