How to Research Video Topic Ideas with Lindsay Marie: Beauty and the Vlog Podcast 101

“The best part about YouTube is that you can grow into other things.”

What would you do if your lucky stars aligned and you won a free stay at a brand new fully-furnished apartment for an entire year, with free utilities, groceries, and monthly gift cards to boot? Well, you might think this is just wishful thinking, but sometimes wishes do come true! For 21-year-old Lindsay Marie, who was just fresh out of college, winning a contest and getting this dream-come-true opportunity was exactly what she needed in order to pursue her dreams and focus on her YouTube channel.

“I feel like there’s enough success to go around but a lot of people feel like they have to compete.”

In a stroke of more good luck, shortly before winning the contest Lindsay Marie’s Bethany Mota haul video caught the attention of Bethany Mota herself. This one video alone got her about 30,000 subscribers in just three days within just a month of starting her YouTube channel. Now, three years later, Lindsay Marie has currently over 300K subscribers and 14.6 million video views.

“I always have to remind myself when I see someone doing really well that it’s their turn. They deserve that. I should be happy for them and I know that my time will come eventually.”

However, everyone knows it takes more than just luck to have a successful YouTube channel. And anyone who has a YouTube channel knows that sometimes content creators do find themselves running out of video topic ideas.

So, how does one rise to the situation and break out of that slump? Stay tuned and find out how to research video topic ideas like Lindsay Marie to get your creative juices pumping.

8 Key Interview Takeaways

  1. Back-to-school season is one of the best times to grow your number of YouTube subscribers. From back-to-school morning routines, outfits, hairstyles, hauls, and even advice, videos that have anything to do with back-to-school tend to do really, really well because everyone is just searching for “back-to-school” at that time.
  2. Lists do very well and 15 is the number to beat. Statistically speaking, lists in blog posts and in YouTube videos do better than other types of titles, perhaps because they’re actionable. So, you can come up with something like “15 Back-to-School Lunch Ideas” or “15 DIY School Supplies” and the number 15 is actually proven to get more people to click on the video.
  3. It helps to know more people in the industry. Lindsay Marie makes sure to go to as many networking events as possible and do as many collaborations and hang out with as many YouTubers as possible.
  4. Start thinking about future opportunities. Once you have a big enough audience, think of what you would want to do next, be it a clothing line, book, or something from your YouTube channel.
  5. Research and look for what’s trending. When thinking about new video topic ideas, find out what your audience is asking for. Use Google trends to look up different key words and find out how much they’re trending on YouTube. For Lindsay Marie, she also searches her analytics to see which of her videos in the past did well and she uses that to figure out her next video topic idea.
  6. Figure out what you can do for you own channel. There’s no point worrying about someone else’s. Comparing yourself and your numbers to others won’t help you in the long run.
  7. Don’t be a copycat. It’s perfectly okay to get a video topic idea from someone, but don’t directly copy people and do the exact same video they did.
  8. Be a YouTuber at heart. Subscribe to a channel that’s doing very well because every single person you watch can help you. Anyone can have a video that does well and before you know it everyone is doing those types of videos. You have to be not just somebody who creates content but someone who is consuming content as well to stay current with what’s happening in your niche. (Do you need help discovering your niche?
