YouTube is hard but it’s not impossible! You have just as much chance to hit success as anyone. Just take it from a 10-year YouTube veteran living all the way in the Netherlands! Beauty & Hair YouTuber Lucy “Loepsie” Kyselica gives us the scoop on her journey from zero to half a million subscribers and how you can carve a place out for yourself on YouTube!

Loepsie is a 10 year YouTube veteran. She started all the way in high school and never stopped going. She decided to mimic her favourite beauty blogs and become a beauty blogger herself for a school project. Those bloggers were making YouTube videos to expand their content and so she decided to do that as well. She was hooked, after the project, she started a new channel and continued to grow it. Now she has almost 500k subscribers and over 57 million total video views!

She is 25 years old, lives in the Netherlands and became full-time on YouTube right after she graduated from college in 2014 when she had about 70k subscribers. She makes hair tutorials and recreations of hairstyles from movies and TV shows for her target audience of English speaking ladies her age. She carved her spot in the beauty and haircare niche by making YouTube videos to share her haircare tips in the early internet days when forums ruled the world. She believes that being your true self is your ultimate superpower in having success on YouTube.

  1. Get clear on the ideal audience for your content. If you’ve been doing YouTube for a little while, you should have a firm grasp on who your ideal audience is. Their age group and other demographics, their likes and dislikes. That not only helps you to make content that they would appreciate, but it would help you to determine which audience you will NOT be catering to. Loepsie closed down her Dutch channel because she was talking to an entirely different audience from her English channel, and she knew enough to know that difference did not make her comfortable. If you don’t have a firm grasp on your ideal audience yet, now’s your wake up call to start figuring it out.
  2. Play the long game with content creation. Many YouTubers were financially devastated by the latest adpocalypse, but not Loepsie. She set in her intentions from day 1 to always make family friendly content. That doesn’t have to be your path, but when you start, have a plan for how you will monetize your channel. If your content is not always the cleanest, focus on securing things outside of YouTube’s ad platform like brand deals and affiliates. But make sure your intention is set so you’re not caught off guard.
  3. Train people to expect your videos. Being consistent creates an expectation and anticipation in your viewer’s mind, and having a raving fan looking forward to your videos is a very good thing. You start by showing up at a consistent time. Doesn’t have to be each week, twice a week or daily, but it has to be the same time you promise your audience, every time. As a bonus, being consistent helps the YouTube algorithm boost your videos.
  4. Do it for the love, not the likes. People who’re making content for the recognition and not because they truly love it are very easy to spot. You don’t want to be caught in that trap. Several guests have been on the show who’ve at one point fallen into the trap of being too caught up in the views and likes and subscribers, that they’ve lost sight of why they started YouTube in the first place. It’s an easy mistake to make, so heed Loepsie’s warning. Always be connected to your why: the reason you started and the reason you love making the content you do. The moment you can’t find the love is the moment you need to pivot and search for it. Don’t make empty content.
  5. Collaborate to accelerate your growth. Collaboration is a great way to grow your channel and it’s also a win-win for all the parties involved. All the channels get good content, the creative power is multiplied when people share ideas, and viewers get a diverse piece of content to enjoy plus an introduction to other people they may like to follow as well. Find YouTubers who you genuinely have something in common with, who are also at your stage of growth, and collaborate with them. Connecting with bigger YouTubers is a little different. Approach them with something that they may not be able to easily get on their own.
  6. Stay humble and relatable. Do you believe that success changes people? Maybe it does, maybe it makes you more of who you already are, either way, remember, you being who you are now is what drew your audience to you in the first place. You being someone who’s just like them, helps them to resonate with your story, laugh at your jokes and understand your struggles. When you get successful, naturally your struggles will be different, but don’t become the kind of person who will alienate the people who’ve grown with you. Remember where you’re coming from and stay humble.
